Mary Kay Sigaty is holding a fundraiser at The Melting Pot restaurant in Wilde Lake Village Green tomorrow. This would be a good time for all those who care about the future of Columbia to show up and show her some love.
I think it would be particularly appropriate for Ken Ulman to attend and shower her with accolades for her work to make the Columbia Town Center redevelopment a reality. I think this is a great opportunity for him to give her a big ol’ endorsement before her alleged primary opponent makes his official announcement on Monday.
I see by her facebook page that Delegate Guy Guzzone is planning to attend but I do not see any other of her Democratic colleagues on the attendee list. I think it’s safe to assume that Liz won’t be there.
There’s still time. The event is from 5:00 to 7:00 and it’s forty five bucks at the door.

Hot cheese? That seems apropos.
BTW, how's the Droid?
Show her some "love"? Is that what johns are calling it these days? You'd know better than me.

That's what people who communicate with folks under 60 call support. Guess most of us not afraid of the change or the future would know better than some, like BoKlein.
Is Dennis Schrader a developer?
Folks under 60, washed up hippies from the 60's. What's your problem with the number 60?
God willing you'll get there.
But more puzzling, this blog host is probably closer to age 60 than any of the commenters.
Support? Support. Love. The euphemisms *abound*. It's payola for decisions that take money from Taxpayers to developers.
It should be no surprise, but I will be there. Mary Kay needs our support to continue to serve western Columbia.
John, so disappointing. An outsider selling his soul to become an insider always makes me cringe.
I so badly want to support Mary Kay Sigaty, but I cannot at this time. As a younger Columbian, I am in favor of development of downtown Columbia so that my family can have an area to call our "own" as we age.
Additionally, as a member of the River Hill Village Board, I know Sigaty has been great about meeting with our community and our Board and helping us deal with a variety of issues including crime prevention and master-plans.
But unfortunately, I saw some comments Mary Kay Sigaty made in the Baltimore Sun in regards to the Healthy Howard plan. As a health-care practitioner, small business owner, and tax payer, I am adamantly against any government run and organized health-care program. Here is the quote: "Mary Kay Sigaty, a west Columbia Democrat, said she believed 'health care is a right, not a choice.'"
I do not know where in the Constitution or Bill of Rights it says health care is a "right."
I would like to know the Republican opponents stance on development and Healthy Howard. If he is in support of development, and in support of ending the Healthy Howard program, then he has my vote and my money. On the other hand, Sigaty is certainly a better choice than Klein. So, if the Republican challenger doesn't speak up soon and show me he is organized, I guess I'll throw my support to the lesser of two evils, and support Sigaty.
So it looks like after that long winded thinking out loud, you're supporting Mary Kay. Did you realize you took yourself in a circle in public?
anon 12:28,
haha, yeah, good point. What I was trying to get at, is that Mary Kay has done alot of great things in regards to development and River Hill, and I support her over Klein... but, I want to know more about her republican opponent before I make an "official" endorsement.
Tom D'Asto is great. But he's not likely to get into a brawl over something that has already been decided. That wouldn't be too bright.
Trevor,
Sigaty has made hundreds of votes over the last 6 years (BOE & Council). You will not agree with every decision from anyone. If you are not going to support her and support someone you don't even know and haven't even seen before campaign season over 1 vote, shame on you.

I guess I wasn't clear enough for you. Like any voter there are some issues that are important to me, and some that are less-so. Due to my unique experience and background, the two big local issues are the downtown Columbia development and Healthy Howard. Before I "put my money where my mouth is" and donate to one campaign, I would like to know the other candidates' stances on these two issues. If any certain candidate does not want to publicize their stance on these issues, or simply doesn't have the means to publicize their stance, I will not be supporting him/her.
Trevor,
You were clear. Don't let 'em get to you.
Are you the same Trevor that was in the original Leadership class? I still want to try to meet up one of these days.
Tom/HCR
HCR,
I am that same Trevor. I sent you a message on facebook. We will meet up. Should we invite Anonymous to come along?
I carry the Anonymi with me in my heart wherever I go.
I just love it when two people come together on my blog.

So, let's make this my official stance on the Town Center re-development: It's been voted on. It's a done deal. It's such a done deal that I want to be the community enforcer to make sure that the developer's actually stick to what they signed up to do! I come from a part of the district/county that has seen the developer's plan unfold repeatedly: propose a plan of high density, fight with the community, come to some middle ground, and then as soon as the equipment starts to move earth the developer puts up those familar orange signs announcing a change in plans! Well, I won't stand for it as your Councilman. In fact, I will push for completion of the plan as fast as possible. We don't need this dragging out for decades!
As for Healthy Howard, health care is no more a right than someone having a right to brand new sports car. No one goes without health care that needs it. By law, HC General has to treat anyone that walks into the emergency room. Yes, this, in part, increases our premiums that we pay for health care, but in Howard County I also have to pay a tax so that Healthy Howard can exist.

Trevor,
Mary Kay Sigaty put her political career on the line to push through the downtown Columbia legislation. This was without question her biggest accomplishment and perhaps the biggest accomplishment of the county council over the last four years. Mary Kay more than anyone made this happen.
Yet, you're willing to throw your support to a guy who clearly doesn't get it because you're upset that Mary Kay has a typically liberal position on health care and supports Ulman's pet project? You realize Healthy Howard gets $500k out of a budget of $800 million, right? That's a rounding error.
Tom, Did you really just say people without insurance should just go to the ER for care? Really??!!??!! I'm sorry, but that is just so absurd!
BTW, it costs HoCo citizens less then $2.00 per citizen per year for Healthy Howard. What else could you buy for $1.88 that is worth that much?
It's official. Both Tom D'Asto and Mary Kay are pro 5500 new residences post haste.
That leaves only Klein.
It's looking an awful lot like Klein is heading for an easy win.
That race will clearly be a referendum on the new downtown plan.
Tom,
I am very impressed that you responded so quickly to my query on your position. I love that the blogosphere lets people communicate in this manner. I will be emailing you to discuss your positions.
Anon 7:15, I will repeat myself one more time. I have certain issues that are more important to me than others. I am a dentist and a small business owner. I have followed the health-care debate very closely both nationally and locally. This is the issue that is important to me. There has been a push from bee-keepers to change the laws in regards to bee keeping. Mary Kay has been in support of changing these laws. Most people don't care the slightest bit about that law, but I can imagine someone with a bee-sting allergy would care very deeply. We all have our important issues, and we have a civic responsibility to tell our elected officials via direct communication, with our pocketbooks and with our votes how we feel about these issues.
Say what, Anonymous May 20 9:22 am???
What tea leaves have you been smoking... sorry... reading?
While it is remotely possible that 5000 people could have been found to support a referendum, it is absurd to think that a majority of voters would undo all the work that went into the downtown Columbia plan.
Give up the tea, Anonymous, and wake up and smell the coffee. It's morning in Columbia.
Anonymous May 20 9:22am: I sense a little sarcasm in your post.
Either way, it made me laugh! Haha!
This is one referendum the inner circle of hell won't be able to stop.
I promise to be a gracious winner.
"inner circle of hell" lol!
Sigaty's future is aligned with the future of the downtwon columbia plan. If it moves forward quickly and well, she look like a visionary who can make things happen. If it stalls or looks incomplete, she looks like she is sloppy and can't follow-through.
The next 3 months will be very telling as GGP issues and downtown issues unfold!
As much as I am looking forward to the shovel hitting the ground to start the downtown revitalization process, I can't believe that the next three months will be telling of very much. This is a 30-year plan, and that shovel won't hit the ground until at least 2013. While there is a whole lot of implementing legislation that will be required, we are also getting deeper into campaign season. In realistic terms, I wouldn't count on much substantive legislation to implement the plan for downtown Columbia until after the election.
I like KleinBo? What about K-Bobo? Or A-Liz? Liz-al? Whatever. Hard to tell them apart anyway.
I'll be a gracious winner, in contrast to the 'winners' on the pro ggp bailout at taxpayer's expense commenters.
anon 3 33, got something other than parroting a hyena?
Anonymous 5.23 @ 12:42 pm, please define a victory. What are you winning? Not revitalizing downtown? Not creating more jobs? Not having more cultural opportunities? Please explain. How is that winning?
