Deliberate Misrepresentations

Last Sunday, at Kahler Hall in the Village of Harpers Choice, Alan Klein, the spokesperson for CoFoCoDo tried to have it both ways. In his first statement in this video he claimed that CoFoCoDo “represents a large portion of the community” whereas at best they represent about 200 people out of a Columbia population of 100,000.

Later on he complains that his group is being labeled as a “small band of disgruntled citizens afraid of change.” He called this a “deliberate misrepresentation.”

I don’t know about. I think the real deliberate misrepresentation is the claim that CoFoCoDo represents a large portion of the community. On the other hand, if anyone doubts that this is a small group of disgruntled citizens afraid of change all you need do is read their comments on the HCCA listserv.

Wow.

Nice video. How many people were interviewed on camera, and how much of the actual testimony was protrayed?

Also, I'd like to know the background information on those who got "speaking parts" in this video...who are they, and what vested interests do they have in Howard County? Just askin....

And lastly, I'd just like to say that all of the wealth I'm accumulating in HoCo I'm taking out of here...I'm gonna sell all my properties, and take all my money, and head west...lower taxes and less county and state hassle...taking the advice of a son of B-more....

I might be movin'
to Montana soon
Just to raise me up a crop of
Dental Floss

Raisin' it up
Waxen it down
In a little white box
That I can sell uptown

By myself I wouldn't
Have no boss,
But I'd be raisin' my lonely
Dental Floss

"whereas at best they represent about 200 people out of a Columbia population of 100,000."

Your streak of inaccuracies continues lately, you having overstated Columbia's population by perhaps 15% and understated CoFoDoCo's easily checked >400 members/supporters by more than 50%. With that list having been posted prior to this year, I'm guessing their supporter base has grown well beyond that.

The Census' estimates of Columbia's 2006, 2007, and 2008 populations were 93,637, 92,790 and 88,812, respectively.

Wow, Columbia's population has dropped by nearly 5,000 people since 2006 if those figures are correct. What has been the impact of this drop in terms of traffic? I haven't noticed a difference.

How are we supposed to trust what you say when CCD (the actual name of Klein's group) very openly displays the more than 450 members of this group.

And HCCA does not influence county government, the claim otherwise continues to puzzle.

It's actually the new group, alliance (or some 'a' word) that is rearranging a handful of members to try and claim additional support. As such, you realize how difficult it is to get people involved and supporting anything which adds to the CCD group's credibility. Those 450 people all have family, neighbors and friends who they will talk with in 2010 around election time. The only other group that comes close is the one-issue Rt 32 group.

Readers cannot rely on your statements to be factual.

Glad to see some commentors chime in with different figures and different facts. One has to wonder, however, who's sources are actually accurate?

In a Brave New World where our esteemed Fourth Estate--traditional journalists--can't afford to exercise the editing and fact-checking that news outlets exercised in the past, the anon. commentor has taken that place on the emergent news outlet of the blog, keeping it real and presenting other sources for facts and factoids.

Well done.
