Scene This Week In…

There are many gardens in Columbia that most residents never get to see because they are tucked away in the various office complexes and business parks around town. This one is nestled in between three single story office buildings in the Columbia Business Center on Dobbin Road.

It occurred to me that this would make an interesting series of posts…the hidden gardens of HoCo.
Yesterday, Mama Wordbones and I decided to hike along the banks of the Patapsco River just outside Ellicott City. We grabbed some sandwiches from the Trolley Stop and found a nice shaded spot along the river bank for lunch.

After we finished I decided to fill up the plastic bag that held our lunch with other trash that I found laying around us. As I was doing this another hiker emerged from a trail in the woods holding two bags.

“I found these bags and filled them up with trash too,” he told me as we briefly commiserated about the amount of trash in this beautiful setting. “I don’t want to sound self righteous or anything but it sure would nice if more people did this,” he said.

Amen to that.

Later, as we hiked further along the rocky shores we came across this graffiti on a large rock.

That’s a bit extreme but it sure would be nice if more people just picked up after themselves.

Good points about the litter. I just started a list of public gardens in the region on my own blog and realized that we have a few garden spots around Columbia that should be included. (Oakland Manor, Symphony Woods...) Thanks for the photos.

My kids and I have to go through the common areas of our neighborhood a couple of times per year and clean trash out of the creek. It's sad that we have to do this. But there is satisfaction in knowing that you are doing the right thing.
