Stale Bread

When I stopped by Orinco Coffee Shop this morning I saw two tractor trailers backed up to the entrance of the Atlanta Bread Company at the opposite end of the strip of eateries on McGaw Road.

A closer inspection revealed this note taped to the door.
The closing of this eatery comes as no great surprise to me. I ate there once and never went back. The food was, at best, average and I felt the prices were high for the value received.

This is a great location though and I expect it won’t be long before another food operation fills the space.

Wow. I actually liked that place and have eaten there several times.

Great change for a mom and pop's joint to go in!

What - oh no! After moving back to Maryland after a 3-year stint in Georgia in the late 90's, I'm upset to hear one of my favorite Atlanta-chains has shut down our local cafe. It also took forever for the cafe to even open, since at one point it was going to be a franchise, but then corporate opened it instead. Must have been some fiasco about that. Do you remember how long it sat there constructed and ready to go before it actually opened? And, if you want a pricey sandwich shop, you can check out the Cosi chain on Dobbin Rd., near Party City. I can't believe it took this long for a Cosi to move into Columbia - but I wasn't that impressed with this location.

Really hated that place. They did have better coffee than Panera, but it was terribly managed. Including slipping chicken on a salad and then not understanding that the concern wasn't the charge for chicken but it's existence.

Orinoco is just way too awesome - and I know they've had staff problems, but the food and drink is worth it.

All the more reason to drop in at Orinoco Coffee House. The Tanzania Peaberry coffee they sell is my favorite bean.

I'm not surprised. I actually liked the food, but it wasn't consistent and they were clearly having trouble with their service as well. It was one of my only free wifi spots nearby though so I'm definitely sad.

I hope something better takes over soon!

Amy,

I checked out Cosi today on your suggestion. I had a Tandori chicken sandwhich that was pretty impressive. I'll definately go back.

OMG wordbones - spelling gaff. The pretty faces must've spun you off guard.

Can anyone list the wifi spots in howard county?

Iconic: Ouch. Please.

Intelligent readers: go to howardcounty blog for updates on citizen activities. Info and discussions are picking up (true, after checking another poster's claims)

I actually kind of liked the place, but Abbzug hated it with a passion. Every time we went they seemed to be out of most kinds of bread, including, usually, her choice. Which is bad for a bread place.

Anne, Orinoco has free wifi, and they are in the same strip of stores as the Atlanta Bread Company is/was.

For local Wi-Fi, Google Wi-Fi Howard County Maryland. First listing should be Free Wi-Fi Hotspots locations in Md. There is also local Broad Band in Dayton. Also check local libraries, especially Gleenwood. Good Luck.

That store closing comes as no surprise. On only my second visit, I watched the staff goofing off and throwing trash at one another, chatting on ceelphones, and arguing with one another... a capable manager would have had these witless teenagers outside on the curb waiting for their final paycheck.

Here's hoping for another independent owner/chef a la Victoria Gastro Pub. If you've not tried it yet, disregard the strange name and prepare yourself for an excellent menu.

Pic of the closing letter would be more useful at a resolution suitable to modern displays (eg, link to larger image).

As it is I could read it after viewing it locally and hitting magnify 3-5 times. ;-) (one more magnify and it would have been unreadable!)

I liked the place too. Granted, the service could be questionable but I found it to be reasonably priced and the food was usually pretty good. I definitely prefered it to Panera.
