Mary Pivar is a self described “respected Village Elder, with 30 years teaching experience…” She wants us to know this in order to add weight to her suggestions for a new social media curriculum for the Howard County Public School System.
After reading her manifesto one could get the impression that Elder Mary isn’t too keen on facebook, blogs, websites, and “Websites allowing responses.”
God forbid.
Elder Mary believes that “in this era of instant "communication" truth is at greater risk, because "bullet speak" is the language of advertising, not thoughtfulness. Instead of in-depth of reporting, be it TV "news", internet whatevers, or print media, the "sound bite" is often the beginning, middle and end.”
Internet whatevers?
There’s more so lest this blog be caught up short by not being thoughtful, here is the link to the complete “extension of issues” message from your “respected village elder”. As Hillary Clinton once said, “it takes a village to raise a child.”

Isn't this the final proof that the wingnuts in Wilde Lake, and their friends in Town Center and Oakland Mills, are afraid of change and consequently out of touch with reality?
Am I supposed to cry because Mary Pivar, Barbara Russell, and the Broidas are slow and plodding relics of a bygone era? It is long since time for them to sit down, shut up, and let the rest of us live our lives.
Sounds like the same commenter who, on explorehoward.com said that developers demand that unfettered development be kept unfettered.
I guess it's frustrating for spoiled brats to meet with opposition.
Darned Democracy! Shut those voters up. NO MORE REFERENDUM, no more developer opposition, keep unfettered development unfettered!
Yeah.
Hello Massachusetts.
No postings on explorehoward for me, but I will say
in a free society, shouldn't they do what they please with their own land? You cannot have both freedom and democracy and our nation is only guaranteed the first.
Absolutely do what they want with their land as long as I don't have to pay for roads, schools, police, teachers, firefighters, water, sewer blah blah blah.
Those tax dollars come from my hard earned income and I want their hands out of my pocket.
She's almost as crazy as that Mona B. lady!
Anon 12:10,
How about you don't pay for the roads in Columbia and you pay full freight for the roads in your community?
Can you appreciate that putting 10% of the projected County growth in the Columbia reduces the pressure/burden on your community, or are you predisposed to living independent of your fellow Howard Countians?
I have some relevant remarks to make about this post, and I was going to quote Plato, Shakespeare, Churchill, MLK, Bill Gates, Warren Buffet, Neil Armstrong, Paul McCartney, T. Boone Pickens and Ayn Rand, Desmond Tutu, Mr. Obama and Henry Ford.
But I don't have enough time, as I am social networking with my family, friends, and business associates. All of whom live across 21 different time zones, from Australia to Moldova.
Do the math. Keep in touch. Sometimes a tweet is worth a thousand words.
OMG! Hilarious, WB!
Check the Howard County Public Education listserv. School Board member Allen Dyer forwarded Elder Mary's silly e-mail to that list.
Ridicule reflects badly on both the perpetrator and the target. Deeper analysis usually reveals fear on the part of the perp.
