In a word, snow. The first of the season, a good one too. My nine year old daughter and I both agreed that this morning it was magical.
For the Ellicott City scene I choose The Good Life Market in Ellicott City. These guys really did a nice job with the holiday décor. They even play holiday music outside. This was picture postcard perfect for a snowy day before Christmas.
In Columbia there is an old stretch of Oakland Mills Road that winds through Thunder Hill and the Smith Farm. It is an amazing trip in time to how Columbia looked before it was Columbia. The fact that it runs right in the middle of Columbia makes it even cooler. It is a very pretty drive on a snowy day.

Isn't that Old Montgomery Road? I love that stretch of road. When I was a kid, we used to call it, "The Bumpy Road" because it wasn't paved very well. When you're on it, it seems like you're way out in the country, which, in essence, you are. Thanks for posting the pic wordbones!
Nope, that road is called Oakland Mills Road. I take that road as a "shortcut" from Downtown to eventually get to the main Oakland Mills Road we all know. At night, that road can be somewhat treacherous since there is no light to speak of. And on Saturday and Sunday mornings, one always find empty beer case boxes and liquor bottles littered on the side of the road from what I assume are teenagers drinking during the previous night.
Interestingly, if you look at a map, it appears that road use to extend and effectively "crossover" what is known as Tunder Hill Road.. If one drives from Oakland Mills Village Center to 175 on Thunder Hill Road, there is a side street on the left hand side that you pass called Oakland Mills Road and I gather, based on how it lines up on a map, the continuation of Oakland Mills Road before the homes were built on Thunder Hill Road.
The Good Life is a great little store. It's got style and spunk, and a set up that's just precious. Plus the owner is most delightful and charming. I recommend a visit and am reminded in this blog post here to stop by and visit/shop, as well.
A little bit of clarification. About twenty years ago, that road was called Old Mongomery Road. In the interim, it has changed, I suppose for the sake of clarity. In the early days, Oakland Mills Road did extend to Rt. 29 and was the point of crossing before Rt. 175 (now Rouse Parkway) was extended to link with Little Patuxent Parkway.
Another interesting point is that, from my recollecton of the plans, when the Smith Property is converted to park/nature center, the road will be removed.
yes, I guess it'll always be Old Montgomery Road to me.
I don't ever recall that stretch of road being called Old Montgomery Road. I do recall when it (Oakland Mills Road that is) was connected to Route 29. Route 29 was then a two lane road and that intersection was a four way intersection with a traffic light. There was a large sign with the Columbia logo in white on a blue field. An arrow pointed accross to the other side of Route 29 to a road called The North Entrance Road. The North Entrance Road wound down through a tree lined road and dead ended in a four lane Little Patuxent Parkway. Today that is the location of Vantage Point Road.

I haven;t been around as long as either Bill or Wordbones, so I'll defer to you either of you about the original name of the road. but it has always been Oakland Mills Road as far as I can remember.
There are still bits and pieces of Old Montgomery Road in Columbia according to the Googly Map:

I think it's sad when old roads vanish.
