Honestly, it really isn’t the foul weather that has me a little cranky today. Truth be told, the weather really doesn’t bother me all that much. Having spent the last four weekends or so putting plant material into the ground, I am happy to have Mama Nature do the watering.
It’s the rainy day driving thing that gets me started. And apparently it is not just me either. Donna, our office administrator, lives in Linthicum. When our office was located in Hanover she would only come to Columbia occasionally. Now she comes to Columbia five days a week. Her question today was, “Don’t people in Columbia use turn signals?”
The answer is not many of them.
That isn’t what compelled me to do a second rainy day post though. It was bad design of the entrance and exit to the small retail center where both Starbucks and Fuddruckers are located on Dobbin Road. Due to the previously posted shutdown of Snowden River Parkway this morning my altered morning traffic pattern bought me by the Starbucks on Dobbin rather than the Orinoco Coffee House on McGaw Road.
Getting in and out of that little shopping center will test any Choose Civility patron. It is essentially an alternating one way street. This morning, as I turned in off of Dobbin Center Way, two other cars were simultaneously approaching the exit on both the right and left side. Thankfully everyone was paying attention and courtesy ruled the day as each took their turn going through the exit/entrance. It’s not that it isn’t wide enough for two cars, it’s that it’s just wide enough for two cars. There is very little margin for error.
I couldn’t help but wonder how that layout got past Sketch Plan Approval.

My weather vs. traffic observation is that when the weather changes, some people are a bit more challenged than others when it comes to adapting. And I've seen this holds true both when going from several sunny days to a day of inclement weather as well as going from several wet days to a sunny day.
The first wet day brings people having more accidents, but the first sunny day brings a few who get carried away, driving too fast or too recklessly, and then also have accidents.
It is unfortunate, however, that "Choose Civility" bumper stickers don't guarantee the vehicles bearing them are always operated in such a manner, instead serving as a rolling statement of hypocrisy all too often.
Perhaps we need a website that would allow gracious feedback to those sporting these civil invitations of opportunities to further improve their own civil choice, along the lines of "Tag XYZ###, both your turn signal and speedometer appeared to be broken April 23rd 29 South just before 175"?
Until then, posting such helpful feedback here could suffice. I'm sure anyone on the trip towards greater civility would appreciate it.

Very funny, I like it.
Is no one going to post a Mother's day item?
I was listening to a radio announcer list the wise things he remembered from his mother's short sayings - hilarious.
My own mother was my biggest fan and the person who supported me when no one else was around. Actually, both my parents were like cheer leaders (at least that's my interpretation), and I only noticed it after I got married and we bought our first house including very old kitchen.
I dismantled every cabinet in the kitchen and carried the parts into the backyard for refurbishing.
The kitchen was a disaster, my then-husband was speechless when he arrived home from work. My parents came over on the weekend and once past the shock of the kitchen's appearance, and seeing all the required items in the yard commented on my energy and how much the kitchen cabinets needed a makeover, along with other encouraging expressions. But when my in-laws arrived, they didn't get past aghast. I guess sometimes being speechless can be a benefit!!
ok, ok, I found some funny signs (same person here):
Funny Signs:
TOILET OUT OF ORDER. PLEASE USE FLOOR BELOW
In a Laundromat:
AUTOMATIC WASHING MACHINES: PLEASE REMOVE ALL YOUR CLOTHES WHEN THE LIGHT GOES OUT
In a London department store:
BARGAIN BASEMENT UPSTAIRS
In an office:
WOULD THE PERSON WHO TOOK THE STEP LADDER YESTERDAY PLEASE BRING IT BACK OR FURTHER STEPS WILL BE TAKEN
In an office:
AFTER TEA BREAK STAFF SHOULD EMPTY THE TEAPOT AND STAND UPSIDE DOWN ON THE DRAINING BOARD
Me again. My favorite funny sign is still that one outside of a police station:
"Toilet Stolen, Cops have nothing to go on"
