Smarter Growth

“Rather than continuing to suburbanize the agrarian landscape, we should urbanize more of the existing suburbs. This is the essence of ‘smart growth’”
In his “Shaping The City” column in today’s Washington Post, Roger Lewis makes the case for the very plan that GGP has proposed for Columbia Town Center. You can find it here.

  1. The essence of smart growth isn't to urbanize suburbs. Urbanizing suburbs diminishes the suburban environment while at the same time accelerating surburbanizing the then-more-accessible agrarian areas.

Instead, the essence of smart growth can far more accurately be described as redeveloping already developed spaces in nearby major cities, Baltimore and DC, both of which have seen six figure decreases in population over the several previous decades.
